We Are Pussy Riot (or) Everything is P.R.

weaves together trial transcripts, letters, interviews, media coverage, and statements from

celebrities and public officials, to re-imagine the story of Pussy Riot as told by

a troupe of Yurodivy, 'Holy Fools,' who, in the Russian Orthodox tradition, strive with

"imaginary insanity to reveal the insanity of the world."

Barbara Hammond's play is straight-up punk rock theatre.

One scene after the other brought the audience further into the story that was being presented. The play not only served as a form of entertainment — it also as a profound lesson in history.  -- Sydney Toth, The Citizen

“…an immersive and outstanding theatrical experience, filled with unique choices and the sobering undercurrent that this story is not just theatrical fiction.”

BroadwayWorld.com

“…a poetic and sliced-up chronicle of the self-styled ‘most famous performance art piece in history’ and the politics and personas that swirl around it.”

City Arts (Seattle)

“…takes us into the spirit of Pussy Riot, into the wild energy and forceful violation of public spaces, into the group's provocative language, and total disrespect for State authority…”

IN THE SPIRIT OF PUSSY RIOT, THIS PLAY IS AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE WHO HAS THE COURAGE, THE CREATIVITY AND THE ENERGY TO DO SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE.  IT HAS BEEN EMBRACED IN DERELICT SHOPPING MALLS, UPTOWN THEATRES AND COLLEGE CAMPUSES WORLDWIDE. SOME DO IT UNDER THE RADAR AND OTHERS TAKE IT TO THEIR STREETS.  THIS IS A SPACE TO SHOW WHAT THEY'VE DONE - AND WHAT YOU CAN DO, TOO.

Barbara Hammond, Playwright

'I was handed a scarf, a balaklava (orange knitted mask) and a Dove chocolate. We Are Pussy Riot! Is a withering, comical, brave, sardonic narrative that moves, mostly at a breakneck pace, including a kangaroo court, an intellectual who dies from hunger strike, a song and dance by the smarmy fascist himself (Putin on the Ritz) and rowdy hi-jinks.

Chaos. Tragedy. Rage. Contempt."
